After a painful break-up in university, Bethany Clarke has sworn off love to focus on her career. From her humble South Side beginnings to her position as an architect intern at a prestigious Chicago firm, she’s proven to be a hard worker and is proud of her accomplishments. In three years, she’ll be a fully licensed architect which is more important to her than anything else.

Confirmed bachelor Nicholas Grey is more than the playboy perpetrated by the tabloids. Now his position as CEO of the architecture firm Grey & Company is on the line, and his mother’s interference is making things more difficult. Nick’s committed to his work, but, in order to be taken seriously, he needs to land a huge project. A stable personal life will help guarantee the contract. Fairy Godmother Faye Delmore hears Nick’s plea and steps in to help. Posing as a publicist, she suggests a strategy to polish his public image, which includes convincing Beth to play his wife. Faye knows Nick needs the huge project to save his job, but she also knows he needs Beth in his life.

What happens when you add a fairy godmother who loves playing matchmaker into the equation? A future designed by destiny.

Location, Location, Location

Designed by Destiny started in Las Vegas, the glitzy, glamorous seat of excess and luxury. The home of “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” like you can just pause your real life and act without consequence. It’s also home to approximately 50 wedding chapels with more than 70k people tying the knot per year. No wonder Vegas is known as the marriage capital of the world.

As a consequence-free zone with plenty of opportunities for an impromptu wedding, Las Vegas made the perfect backdrop for a “fake relationship” turned “marriage of convenience” trope.

I’ve always wanted to incorporate a “fake relationship” trope. Navigating this sort of relationship creates many awkward situations for the characters and presents what my kids like to call “comedy gold.” It’s a fun trope to read, especially as the characters find their way and, ultimately, fall in love. I enjoyed writing Beth and Nick’s early interactions.

In particular, I love this snippet. I’ll set the scene. Nick collects Beth for the conference banquet. He’s pumped with adrenaline at the thought of seeing Beth again as well as signing the important client. Beth, on the other hand, is a bundle of nerves. Deception of any kind goes against her moral code. There was just something about Nick that spoke to her, getting her agree to this temporary madness. She doesn’t feel at all prepared for the banquet. It’s like cramming for a test and not feeling confident about the material. So, there you have it. Nick’s excited and Beth’s nervous.

***

“You look stunning, Bethany.”

“Thank you.” She cursed the blush that spread across her cheeks. “You don’t look so bad yourself, slugger.” She fist-bumped his shoulder. Slugger? She wanted to sink through a hole in the floor. Could she be more awkward?

***

I could feel Beth’s horrified cringe and the hot flush of her cheeks as she chastised herself for her awkwardness. How are you supposed to act around your crush slash boss slash fake fiancée? There’s no how-to manual.

I have had my share of awkward moments. In junior high, I loved acting and was an active member of our school’s drama club. Then, in a skit, I had to slow dance with an older boy in our club. He was dressed as a clown which already complicated the logistics of a slow dance. Add in standing so close and not knowing where to look (he was also very tall). At his chest? Around the stage? Awkward. I decided, then and there, I wasn’t going to be an actress when I grew up. Despite my love of acting and youthful fearlessness of performing on stage, I’m an introvert with personal space issues. A recipe for awkward moments. Plenty of fodder for a “fake relationship” trope.

Intrigued? Read more awkward moments in Designed by Destiny. Available November 15 from Tirgearr Publishing.
