Creators Interview:

What was your inspiration for writing / illustrating your graphic novel?

CULLEN -Sometimes, inspiration sneaks up on you. This book started, or so I thought, with the idea that civilization was a lie that was slowly breaking down, that we were all becoming more feral and wild. And that’s there. It’s baked into the DNA. But the further I dug into the story, the more I realized it was also informed by my thoughts on the creative process and how, once a story is written, I have no real control over how readers will interpret the tale. It wasn’t what I consciously set out to write at the beginning, but it’s there for the world to see.

LEILA -I really like watching movies to get inspired by the atmospheres and framing. I also spend a lot of time researching for reference and documentation ! The more i have, the happier I am!

What would you like readers to know about your book and the characters?

CULLEN -THE LAST BOOK YOU’LL EVER READ is creepy and surreal and sexy and scary and thought-provoking. It’s a look at the collapse of the world as we know it, a look at the birth of whatever is next, and it’s all seen through the eyes of the person who might have caused it all. Olivia Kade is an author at the center of a controversial storm. Because of the book she’s written, some people love her and some people want to see her dead. The problem is, both groups are dangerous. She knows it is risky, but she is embarking on a book tour, and as she travels the country, she sees the world changing in terrifying ways.

LEILA -For the character of Olivia, I had many inspirations from the actresses of the 50s such as Audrey Hepburn and Lauren Bacall ! Also, Coco Chanel who was not an actress, but I love her style. I’ m a huge fan of fashion, and I like to use some references from that world. There are a few in The Last Book You’ll Ever Read !
