Author Interview:
If you could put yourself as a character in your book, who would you be?
I would put myself as Dr Viktor. A bit grumpy, a bit moody, but a heart of gold. He also has a bit of mystery about him which keeps people guessing. If it wasn’t Dr Viktor, it would probably be Miles. I like to watch things around me from the sides rather than being in the centre of attention.
What advice would you give budding writers?
It is easy to get distracted by things like structure, grammar, show v tell, POV’s etc. Always remember that the story is king. Write the story and forget about everything else. Once you have the story down, then editing it becomes easier because you have a strong story to work with. The story is and always will be, what readers remember.
Do you have another profession besides writing?
I am a project manager by trade. I work in a field called ERP which stands for Enterprise Resource Management. I install software to help factories create products efficiently. I am lucky enough to work 4 days a week which gives me an extra day to concentrate on my writing.
Do you snack while writing? Favorite snack?
I snack all the time! Peanuts are my usual choice but lately I have got a little bit addicted to roasted corn. I do find that I snack differently depending on what phase of writing the book I am in. If I am drafting, I snack a lot. I drink a lot of tea and have lately had to go do decaf because I wouldn’t fall asleep until 3am in the morning.
Where do you write?
I have two major places. A sit/stand desk with a desktop computer where I do my editing. And the couch with a laptop for when I am drafting. I find that when I am drafting, I am very sporadic as ideas and imagination flow. When I move to editing, I need more structure, so the sit stand desk works for me.
