Newborn Army

The Scent of a Man Book 3

Damian saw the vampire in charge right away but he was completely surrounded by newborns which were clearly out of control while looking for blood and their next victim.

We will have to wait for a moment that he’s alone and it’ll only be for a split second.” Said Damian. “Whoever sees it first, go in for the kill.

Hours had passed and the newborns still made it impossible.

Damian was about to call it a night when he heard a roar and something flew past him. It was Ash. “Ash No!” Yelled Damian.

The newborns were all over Ash. He couldn’t fight them all off. He was covered in bites, whimpering and barely conscious.

The Covenant

The Scent of a Man Book 4

Damian shared Alyssa’s visions out loud.

“Apparently, the vampire that we killed was from the Bodescu covenant. It turns out that they want revenge and to wipe my covenant out of existence. There is no telling how many are in their covenant.”

Ariel was the first to speak. “Is there no one in control over the covenants? Someone who is the judge and jury? Someone who can stop this nonsense?”

The Morachis” said Damian.“I have spoken to Head Count Elijah and he has summoned both covenants to stand before him within three days from today or there will be consequences.”

Alyssa asked, “What will they do if the other covenant doesn’t show? Or if they go against the Morachis? Their covenant said they would take us out regardless.”

Damian replied, “They will take the covenant out of existence.”

But whose covenant will suffer the consequences?

Half Breed

The Scent of a Man Book 5

Well that was fast.” Said Damian.

Paul responded, “It didn’t take much tracking. An easy find for me and my pack. There are five male vampires and they’re down by coconut creek. Approximately six miles north from your place. They have set up a little camping area. What do you want to do? Set up a surprise attack?”

Damian responded, “We definitely have the element of surprise for an attack.

Let’s go take them out.” Said Paul.

The kill seems too easy.” Said A leery Damian.

Alyssa took in a quick breath of fear. She walked over to Damian and placed her hand upon his face and said, “It’s deceitful. They’re the size of an army. There were only four there at the time of Paul’s observation but that’s not all of them.”

Just then the phone rang. It was Elijah. “Damian, don’t go. It’s a trap.

The Change

The Scent of a Man Book 6

Damian headed for the birthing room with Ariel.

Right away Damian knew something wasn’t right. Mary’s character was like that of his covenants birthing mothers that have been impregnated by a vampire.

Damian laid his hand on Mary’s belly. He could feel the hard kicking. This poor girl was beaten and bruised up and apparently had no blood in her diet. She must have been suffering and going through this alone.

He looked up at Ariel and she nodded. Letting him know she was reading his mind.

Just as Damian was getting ready to remove his hand he heard a voice. What’s this? He thought. A gifted childlike Alyssa but more. They can be read by the touch of a hand.

That sound had jolted him so he placed his hand back on her belly and listened. The voice returned. “She was raped by a vampire and left for dead. She suffered through all this alone while living on the streets. By the way, I’m a boy.”

Ariel venom?” Damian asked.

The Morachis

The Scent of a Man Book 7

Suddenly there came from outside a lot of loud shouting, hooting and hollering.

Damian looked out the window and the Tucci covenant was up in the field and Elijah was right. There were approximately forty of them.

Alright ….” Said Damian. “Jane, Ariel, John, Michael, Jack, Gabriel and Ash let’s go. Paul, lets hold a perimeter until The Morachis arrive.”

They all went outside and the pack shape shifted.

Damian led them to the edge of the field and formed a line with the pack.

Billy shouted. “Vanburg I’ve no beef with you. This is between me and The Morachis.”

Did someone speak my name?” Said Elijah.

My gaze turned head on, and to my shock, I saw that I was in a kind of throne room. An underwater throne room, with glass windows that spanned meters high in the air towards a dazzling, domed skylight. Glowing crystals grew from the walls, illuminating the space in all different colors, Schools of fish were visible swimming past from outside.

Five Songs I Listened To While Writing Kingdom of Sirens and Monsters

When it comes to writing, you get a lot of writers who need complete silence, and other writers who need background noise. I’m one of the latter.

I always listen to music either right before I write, or during my writing sessions. And usually, I have a specific playlist of songs for each book that speak directly to the scenes I’m trying to write.

Personally, I’m more drawn to how the song makes me feel than the lyrics, because I like to channel those feelings into my scenes. But it always helps if a small part of the song has lyrics that make sense for specific scenes I’m writing, just to really connect me to the experience.

If you’re curious, here are five songs I listened to while writing my upcoming novel, Kingdom of Sirens and Monsters, a dual retelling of Snow White and The Little Mermaid.

(Also, I apologise in advance for my super angsty taste in music!)

1) Maggie Lindermann – Knife Under My Pillow

“Sorry, I don’t mean to freak you out

But I hear someone inside my house

Heart racing, keepin’ me awake”

This song has a really fun beat and spirals into a crescendo of notes that make me feel like I’m actually travelling with my main character, Coral, from our regular world down into the Undersea (where she discovers a fantasy kingdom and spends most of the book.)

The lyrics I highlighted were helpful when writing scenes with the villain, because Coral is living with the villain for some time and has a constant sense of paranoia around that character.

2) Lemolo – High Tide

“Someone told me not to look so down and out

Someone said, “Your smile is freaking me out””

A lot of the feedback I’ve gotten on the novel is that the love interest, Lysander, seriously creeps people out! And that’s probably because THIS SONG really creeps me out too, but it was the perfect song to pair with him.

This is a very slow song, and it makes me really uncomfortable when I listen to it. But Lysander is not an ordinary character, and I really needed to tap into his unusual way of thinking to develop his storyline, so I got particularly hooked on the lyrics I highlighted above when writing his scenes.

3) PVRIS – Dead Weight

“Look what you started

You’re turning me heartless

I’m trying my hardest

If I’m being honest”

This is one of my favourite songs of all time (very rarely do I come across a song where I like the chorus, verses and bridges an equal amount the whole way through, and this is one of those songs.) So not only is it a joy to write to, but it really captured the essence of the relationship between Coral and Lysander.

Also, the lyrics highlighted are excellent because they are so LITERAL when translated to what’s actually happening in the book. There is, indeed, a heartless curse plaguing the royal family, and it’s one of Coral’s biggest threats as she navigates the storyline.

4) Breaking Benjamin – Evil Angel

“Don’t leave me to die here

Help me survive here alone”

I discovered this song halfway through the book, and it happened at just the right time as I was trying to navigate Coral’s complex emotions.

On one hand, she is developing trust towards her new, Undine friends, but on the other, she craves to return to the surface and save her family from her evil stepmother. So she’s constantly torn between where her loyalty should lie and the choices she should be making, and this song really captured that feeling.

5) Maggie Lindemann – Crash And Burn

“You picked him over me

And you left with no apology

Felt a knife in your back

Yeah, you thought I was the killer

You’re lookin’ in the mirror”

This song actually helped me more as I was writing the companion novella (Heart of Stone and Sea-foam) that goes with this series, but I was already thinking about the backstory of the villain (and referring to it regularly) so the novella was already in development in the back of my mind.

If you pick up the novella, you’ll discover a forbidden romance between The Evil Queen and Coral’s deceased mother that ends… well, poorly. And this song is the perfect match for that entire storyline (clues can be found in the lyrics highlighted above.)

Something you’ll discover I LOVE to do in my books is throw a 180 plot twist at the reader when they least expect it… and it’s usually tied to the villain. You might find that you go into this novella expecting one villain, but discovering another that you didn’t see coming.

I hope you enjoyed this insight into my writing process. I don’t often share my music tastes with people because I find it to be very intimate and personal, but I enjoyed writing this post and I hope it got you curious about Kingdom of Sirens and Monsters too!

“You look happy.” Mary, his secretary, arranged the files on her desk, then rolled away from her computer. “Hot date?”

“Actually, yes. I’m heading to the baseball game.”

“You?” She folded her hands on her lap. “You aren’t into sports.”

“I love baseball.” He normally kept his private life to himself, so he didn’t discuss that he’d gone to the game the night before.

“Since when?”

“Since I went to my first game when I was six. My dad took me and it was bat day. I still have the bat, too. I fell in love with the sport, and I’m a devoted Cincy fan. Good or bad, I’m a fan.” He checked the stack of his messages. “I’m out. I need an evening with no law and lots of relaxation.”

“Why do I have the feeling you get emotionally involved in your sports? Are you going to see the Grinders game?” she asked.

“I do get invested.” The tips of his ears burned. “But I’m finally going on a date, so there’s that.”

“You are?” She applauded. “Good. I hope it works out and leads to something great.”

“Me, too.” He winked. “See you in the morning.” He strolled out of the main office to the parking lot. The firm wasn’t big and was rarely full. That’s what he loved about Mooresville―it wasn’t a big city. Everyone knew everyone else. Within hours of him going out, everyone would know he’d chosen Duff. Good. He wanted them to know. He wanted to shout to the whole world he’d picked this man.

He unlocked his car and slid behind the wheel. He should go home and change before attending the game, but he didn’t have time. He drove across town to the park. The Grinders weren’t a major league team, but they were popular in Mooresville. Their ballfield was part of the city park, meaning there was a lot of parking and seating. He wanted to be visible, so he parked under one of the lights and waited for Duff. A few people were already there, and the teams were on the manicured turf, stretching.

“You made it.” Duff strolled along the sidewalk. “I thought you’d change your mind.”

“Me? Nah.” Not a chance he’d forget to be here for this. “You’re here.”

“Did you think I’d leave you without a word?”
