In this humorously touching novel by the critically acclaimed author of Degrees of Love, a woman is blindsided when her high school sweetheart abandons her after eighteen years of marriage.

At sixteen, Kimberly Kirby thought the only thing she needed to be perfectly happy was to spend the rest of her life with Jay Braxton. Twenty years later, she still believes it. As they proudly watch their daughter, Haley, graduate from high school, she imagines her life is as perfect as anyone could reasonably expect. Jay is a formidable attorney, she a freelance writer, and their love as strong as ever. With Haley heading to UC Berkeley in the fall, Kimberly fantasizes about making love on the kitchen table. She has no clue that Jay’s bags are already packed.

Now divorced and determined to squelch her love for Jay, she accepts a gig writing a sex and dating blog for divorcees. As the Virgin Dater, she is on the hunt for love. No-strings-attached nights with a sexy fireman and moving to San Francisco are just what she needs to boost her battered ego and mend her shattered heart.

But just as she falls hard for a talented young chef, Jay fights to win her back. Torn between her bold new life and the comfort of Jay’s strong arms, she questions if there is too much to forgive. The ten thousand I love yous that had passed Jay’s lips can’t be dismissed, but nor can her newfound freedom and the knowledge that her happiness doesn’t depend on Jay.

Author Interview:

What is the most courageous thing you’ve ever done?

When my husband was in law school, I was the sole support for our family. At the time, I worked at Saks Fifth Avenue and made good money by retail standards and had a killer wardrobe thanks to a clothing allowance that was part of my compensation package. But I struggled to make ends meet with two toddlers in daycare and living in the San Francisco Bay Area. I took a risk, quit my salaried position, and in hope of making more money, accepted a straight commission sales position in the financial industry. I barely had enough banked to float us until my first commission check. Thankfully, it worked out!

Do you have another profession besides writing?

Yes, I wear many hats. I’ve worked in the financial industry for over twenty years and currently am a Relationship Executive for a Fortune 500 Company. I took a three-year hiatus from corporate life a few years ago and did a lot of writing and launched an on-line book business, which is still in operation. I keep telling myself that I’ll close down the book biz to give myself more time to write, sleep, and spend time with my hubby, but it hasn’t happened yet.
Where did you get your idea for Ten Thousand I Love Yous?

Growing up in a small farm community, many classmates and extended family married straight out of high school and started having children right away. Not all pairings ended well, but most couples I know have had successful lives and strong marriages. Marrying young doesn’t have to be a recipe for disaster. I thought it would be an interesting scenario to explore but with twist: what would it be like to split from the one and only person you’ve seriously been with?

Which was the hardest character to write? The easiest?

The hardest character to write was Jay. The book starts with him leaving Kimberley, which completely crushes her. It would have been easy to leave him as a hateful ex who has wronged our gal, but I wanted him to be a good person who made a bad choice while going through a difficult time of life. The crawl back to show that he is a good guy while keeping him real and believable was a tough task. What made it even harder was having the entire story told from Kimberley’s point of view.

The easiest character was Joshua. From the time I started penning the novel, I could see and hear him clearly in my mind and knew exactly what purpose he served in the story. Of course, I love Joshua. He is also one of my favorite characters. The biggest challenge I had with him was trying to make him a little less perfect without blowing up his character.

Ten Thousand I Love Yous has been categorized as both Women’s Fiction and Romance. Which do you think it is?

I love a good Romance as much as anyone and understand why some reviewers reference the book as a Romance. It has romantic elements with an interwoven love story, but I wouldn’t classify it as Genre Romance. In my humble opinion, the focus of a traditional Romance is two people falling in love and overcoming seemingly unsurmountable obstacles to be together. The struggle to unite is the main conflict. Ten Thousand is more about Kimberly’s personal journey and growth—more character drive than plot driven. Her happily-ever-after ending is not a forgone conclusion.

What advice would you give to help others create plotlines?

As an acting student, I had a great professor who encouraged his students not to decide what their characters wouldn’t do. The idea was to let the characters take over and react in the moment to what is in front of you. I think the same principle applies to writing fiction. It is very important to ask, “what if” and not decide what a character absolutely would or would not do. As one of my characters states, “… I really don’t know what I’m capable of until I’m in the situation.” It’s that unpredictability that keeps a story exciting.

A dying universe.

When the Home worlds finally achieved the technology to venture out into the stars, they found a graveyard of dead civilizations, a sea of lifeless gray planets and their ruins. What befell them is unknown. All Home knows is that they are the last civilization left in the universe, and whatever came for the others will come for them next.

A search for answers.

Scout is an Archivist tasked with scouring the dead worlds of the cosmos for their last gifts: interesting technology, cultural rituals—anything left behind that might be useful to the Home worlds and their survival. During an excavation on a lifeless planet, Scout unearths something unbelievable: a surviving message from an alien who witnessed the world-ending entity thousands of years ago.

A past unraveled.

Blyreena was once a friend, a soul mate, and a respected leader of her people, the Stelhari. At the end of her world, she was the last one left. She survived to give one last message, one final hope to the future: instructions on how to save the universe.

An adventure at the end of a trillion lifetimes.

With the fate of everything at stake, Scout must overcome the dangers of the Stelhari’s ruined civilization while following Blyreena’s leads to collect its artifacts. If Scout can’t deliver these groundbreaking discoveries back to the Archivists, Home might not only be the last civilization to exist, but the last to finally fall.

Author Interview:

1. Tell us a little about how this story first came to be.

It started with a question: what does any of this really mean?

It was 2020; Covid had the world panicked and stuck indoors, I’d missed out on my own graduation from my Master’s, my brother’s graduation from high school, and I had some family in the hospital. Friends lost jobs and couldn’t make rent, and everyone’s plans were falling through left and right: friends’ plans, family’s, strangers. It was a pretty harrowing time. What can the average person do in the face of so much uncertainty and sadness? What is there to dream for, when it feels like the world is falling apart? Those are the questions that evolved out of the first one, and sparked the whole book for me.

2. What, if anything, did you learn when writing the book?

A lot! I am really lucky to have friends in various fields of study: biology, astrophysics, philosophy, psychology, AI – I got to pick a lot of brains to bring some veracity to this little story. Learning about the intricacies of modern Artificial Intelligence research was a highlight. I always envisioned AI as an intelligent, sentient helper appearing as a holographic entity (thank you, Halo and Mass Effect). Turns out that while that is certainly a facet of AI research, much of it involves creating tools to help humans in more subtle ways, like generating original art or making coding easier. AI isn’t an enormous element in Last Gifts, but its few appearances benefitted immensely from looking at current research.

3. What surprised you the most in writing it?

There’s a paradigm in writer’s circles that characters will act of their own accord, and that was definitely the case with Last Gifts. My antagonists pulled smarter stunts than I originally intended, meaning my heroes had to be smarter, too. Every character really came out to play with their natural talents, and they left me no way to pull punches or allow contradictions. I originally envisioned heroic battles – who doesn’t! It’s a space story! But my main character, Scout, was adamant in their being a geeky archaeologist with no combat skill whatsoever. It led to the story being different than I planned, but it is absolutely better for all the ways I didn’t plan it.

4. If it’s not a spoiler, what does the title mean?

I don’t know if spoiler is quite the right term in this case, but I do think the title’s meaning is one best left to reader interpretation. I will say that the title came to me right along with the original idea, and is completely unaltered from that first flash of inspiration.

5. Were any of the characters inspired by real people? If so, do they know?

I plead the 5th!

6. Do you consider the book to have a lesson or moral?

While I know it’s sometimes frowned upon to be “moralizing” in fiction, I did write this book with something that I hoped readers might be able to take away into their real lives. I have been surprised – and delighted! – however, to find that different readers are taking different things from the story.

I think an author works with their own ideas, their own internal story, but once that story is loosed on the world it transforms into something a little different. Readers bring their own ideas and stories to the experience, and something new can be taken away. I’m really pleased about it all.

7. What is your favorite part of the book?

There is so much I like (and so much I wish I could make better) about Last Gifts. One character that always brought me joy, though, was Pumpkin, Scout’s cat companion. I did my best to make Pumpkin everything a cat is: sleepy, jumpy, playful, spontaneous, loud, and very, very opinionated. Even though he’s a cat in space, he seeks things all cats desire: pets, play, personal space, and food, of course.

8. Which character was most challenging to create? Why?

I do think Scout was the challenge of this book. The story is told through their close, personal lens, which means every part of the narrative is colored in with their perspective. It’s always hard to balance a first-person-narrator’s opinions with the actual facts of the story. It took a couple tries to get their voice right, and a couple more tries to figure out what they would really do in various situations, but in my mind the struggle was worth it. I hope Scout speaks for themself!

9. What are your immediate future plans?

Working on the next book! Last Gifts does not have a sequel planned, but I am working on something new (and a little different).

Unfortunately, I’m not far enough along that I’m ready to share details just yet, but if the cosmic backdrop of dread works for you in Last Gifts, you might be interested in what’s next!

EXCERPT:

The door opened, admitting Ellora, and he gestured to her to sit back. Absentmindedly, he watched her prowl over to the sofa, sitting with grace and economy in her movements. Running a hand through his hair, he listened to his client.

“I’m looking for an ancient religious artifact originating in Neolithic times. Athens should be your first stop.”

There was an odd note, something he couldn’t put his finger on. Greece. He hadn’t been there before. He glanced at Ellora who looked as though she were listening with every fiber of her being.

“No problem. What is it?”

“A chalice, possibly Roman Catholic. It needs to be returned to its rightful owner. You know the budget.”

No budget. Spend what is needed.

“Understood. What information can you give me?” He nodded at Ellora and watched as she pulled an iPad from her bag.

“It is made of metal and has engravings of three spirals and eagles on the outside with a cross in the center of the bowl.

He knew better than to ask for any images, knowing Constantin didn’t put anything on paper. All business was conducted over the phone, and then only very briefly.

“Do you know when it was last seen?”

“No. You know all I know. Keep in touch.”

A click preceded the dial tone.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Author ImageKaren Lovell, better known by her pseudonym, Cait O’Sullivan, grew up in Ireland to an Irish mother and an English father. Dividing her school holidays between idyllic time on her Granny’s farm and the big cities in England culminated in her feeling as though she had a foot in Ireland and another in England, often joking that she came from the Irish Sea. Wanderlust in her blood sent her out to travel the world and then, reluctant to give up on following her dreams, she started writing. After publishing four books, the world of shamanism called to her and she spent three years studying with her guides. This resulted in a rich vein of inspiration for her writing and she combined her loves of traveling, shamanism and love itself into a brand new trilogy—A Dance of Flames. She currently lives in the countryside in England with her hubby, four daughters and one Irish setter and visits Ireland on a regular basis. But maybe one day she’ll move back there.
