It’s Christmas Eve in western Kansas and a snowstorm is gaining strength as Bear Bailey, a devoted Great Pyrenees, tries to comfort his beloved owner Mary. She’s in hot water with the local business villain, and Bear’s earlier altercation with this miser only seemed to make things worse. When Mary blurts out that she wishes for a different life, Bear blames himself for her despair and runs away.

Meanwhile Jiff, a Labrador patiently waiting for his own human to meet him at the Rainbow Bridge, sees Bear shivering alone in the blizzard. Knowing Bear won’t survive the night without intervention, Jiff agrees to act as Bear’s guardian angel on Earth. He is determined to show the Great Pyrenees what the lives of the humans around him would have been like without his presence over the years.

A holiday “tail” for those who love the season but feel the deep loss of loved ones (both furry and human), It’s a Wonderful Dog shines a light on the power of love and community, and reminds us that miracles do exist.

Grant

Moonlight shines through the cracked blinds, keeping me awake. I had been hoping to get a few hours of sleep, but tonight it appears and impossible feat. Turning my head to the side, I glance at the raven-haired beauty lying next to me, her tanned skin peeking out from underneath the sheet, barely covering her bare breasts. I take a moment, watching her chest rise and fall, making sure she’s sleeping before quietly slipping out of bed, resigned.

Reaching for my backpack, I pull out clean boxer-briefs, slipping them on before stepping into my faded blue jeans. As I pull a white t-shirt over my head, my thoughts drift to the open road, my fingers already twitching with anticipation. I tug my shoes on, knowing it’s time for me to go. Where? I’m not quite sure.

Taking one last glance at the beauty lying in bed, I sigh as a pull my black leather jacket on before grasping my black helmet from the table. Turning, I slip out the door, quietly closing it behind me, and make my way outside. Striding over to my motorcycle, I throw my left leg over, revving the engine. I pull out, heading northeast, out of Alabama, knowing in my head I’m already gone.

Soon, my body begins to relax as I cross the border into Georgia. Boundless roads appear in front of me as I cruise past endless seas of green. I don’t know exactly where I’m going, but when someone tries to push too far into my life, I just can’t stay, and she started digging. That was her mistake. Something inside me tensed, urging me to leave, to run, to escape. Honestly, I don’t know how to do anything else anymore. She can’t help me. No one can.

Historical Mystery

A historical mystery based on Helms’ Derringer Award-nominated EQMM short story “The Cripplegate Apprehension”.

In 1843 London, a Scottish woodturner named Daniel M’Naghten gunned down Edward Drummond, the private secretary to Prime Minister Robert Peel, while Drummond strolled the streets of Whitehall. M’Naghten believed he shot the Prime Minister and, after being informed otherwise and making a brief statement at his arraignment, he never spoke in public about the crime again. M’Naghten was represented at trial by firebrand Queen’s Counsel Alexander Cockburn, who intended to plead insanity and rewrite four hundred years of English Common Law in the process. In this fictional retelling of the famous historical event, Cockburn recruits legendary London thief-taker Vicar Brekonridge to travel to Glasgow, M’Naghten’s home, and find witnesses who can bolster the insanity defense. What Brekonridge finds instead suggests that M’Naghten was part of a frightening conspiracy to bring down the British government.

 PRAISE FOR VICAR BREKONRIDGE

“In a seamless blending of historical fact and narrative skill, Richard Helms reimagines the sensational case of Daniel M’Naghten, whose 1843 murder trial set a precedent that reverberates to this day. Helms has crafted a thoroughly gripping historical mystery that will leave readers eager to hear more of the “notorious thief-taker” Vicar Brekonridge.

—Daniel Stashower, Edgar Award Winning Author of American Demon

“VICAR BREKONRIDGE may be one of (Richard Helms’) more intriguing creations…a fascinating character to follow around, as he makes his way through the streets and back alleys of London, through its open air markets and dingy taverns or journeying out to Newgate Prison to visit a man he put there…For all his rough-and-tumble manners, cynical bravado, mercenary motives and sliding scale honesty, in a shady profession not particularly known for its integrity, he struts through the streets of London, a cloud of hemp in his wake, hewing to some inexplicable personal code that betrays a startling even-minded empathy for the criminals he hunts down, and a concern for — of all things — justice, which reminded me of Sam Spade‘s moral ambivalence. “

—Kevin Burton Smith, Thrilling Detective Website
