Author Interview:
Sadie: Rene, most writers are bookworms. What books did you read during the pandemic, and which one was your favorite?
René: During the pandemic, I read about seven books and listened to two audiobooks: My Love Story by Tina Turner; Respect: The Life of Aretha Franklin by David Ritz; Too Much and Never Enough by Mary L. Trump; A Higher Loyalty: Truth Lies and Leadership by James Comey; Kit Kat & Lucy: The Country Cats Who Changed A City Girl’s World by Lonnie H. Dupont; Melania: The Rise and Fall of My Friendship With The First Lady by Stephanie W. Wolkoff; What Happened to You? by Oprah Winfrey, Bruce Perry and Love and Respect by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs. I am a diehard romantic. My favorite book was My Love Story by Tina Turner.
Sadie: What’s currently on your read list?
René: Like Lions by Brian Panowich and Speeches That Changed the World
Sadie: What book is currently on your bedside?
René: A Promised Land by Barack Obama. My daughter and her husband gave it to me for Christmas. I keep it there and read it when I have time. If anyone is interested in becoming president or a successful politician, it could be an excellent introduction to politics. President Barack is a scholar. This is a book you take your time reading.
Sadie: What was your favorite book as a kid? Why?
René: There are several memorable childhood books. However, my favorite is the Cinderella story. I liked it because it illustrated how you could start at the bottom, defy all odds, and rise to the top.
Sadie: How many books are in your book collection?
Rene: Through the years, I’ve collected more than 300 books of different genres.
Sadie: What is your favorite quote and one by which you live?
René: “When we treat a man as he is, we make him worse than he is; when we treat him as if he already were what he potentially could be, we make him what he should be” by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
Sadie: What is your favorite book as an adult? Why is it your favorite?
Rene: My favorite book of all time is The Babylon Sisters by Pearl Cleage. I enjoyed her poignant story about human trafficking. I also got the opportunity to meet Ms. Cleage and was given an autographed copy. Her words encouraged me: “Sister writer, tell our stories.” And I did.
Sadie: Thank you for the interview Rene and good luck with your new novel.
