She was created for more than slavery; she was built for rebellion.

In an alternate Victorian England, clockwork cyborgs provide the primary source of labor for the upper class. Known as biomatons, they are property by law and have been manipulated and mind-controlled into subservience.

Taryn Roft, a 17-year-old girl, attending classes at Grafton’s School of Mechanicks in London has a secret. What’s even worse – she cannot remember anything before her 12th birthday.

When a mysterious privateer discovers her secret, he offers her an ultimatum: accompany him to his airship, or her secret will be revealed to everyone. For Taryn, it’s not much of a choice. Facing prejudice and cruelty may be nothing new to the only girl at an all-boys’ school, but the further from home she gets, the darker her situation becomes.

Q&A with Protagonist “Taryn Roft”
  • What is your full name? Do you have a nickname (if so, who calls you this)?
    • My name is Taryn Roft. I do not have a middle name, or if I ever did, I have forgotten it. My best friend Royal calls me “Tiger,” on account of the way I growled at him the first time we met and my red hair.
  • What is it like attending an all-boys’ school?
    • The professors are biased. The boys see me as an object to taunt or conquer—a girl to take out to dinner to prove that they can, but never someone they would truly consider courting. Still, it is not all bad. I am learning more than I ever hoped. Royal can be overprotective, but he helps me stave off the worst of the bullies. And I will have so many opportunities when I graduate.
  • What do you consider the most important event of your life so far?
    • Royal pulling me off the streets when I was twelve. There were days when I was certain I would not see my thirteenth birthday. And then he found me and his father saw something in me, and the rest is history.
  • What do you want to do when you graduate?
    • I am hoping to get a job as a mechanick. I would love to work on an airship, but those jobs are really hard for girls to get so even just working in a clockmakers’ shop or on an estate would be nice. Lord Stokker has promised to help me find something, and I think perhaps Royal is hoping his father himself will employ me so I will not be far away.
  • If you could go back in time and tell yourself one thing, what would you say?
    • It gets better. Do not give up, because it gets better. And there will always be things you will have to hide. There will always be parts of yourself that must be a secret. But you will have people who care about you, so it gets better.
  • What do you hope the future looks like?
    • Freedom for the biomatons. I do not know how that will work, as their labour runs the country right now, but we abolished slavery before. We can do it again.
  • If you could do one thing without consequences, what would it be?
    • I would tell Royal my secret. I have wanted to tell him so many times. It is so difficult to keep a secret from my best friend. But I cannot risk it, not knowing what I do about the way my kind are treated. So if I could tell him without consequences, I would.

In a world where safety is a luxury and honor is found only among outlaws, two people attempt to outrun dangers lurking around each corner and the tragedies that define them.

Bonnie is an outlaw on the run. Beautiful but dangerous; her dark past stalks her like the crater beasts that roam the desert. As the notoriously cruel outlaw Jones sends his henchmen to track her down and retrieve the gun she stole from him, Bonnie hopes she can stay one step ahead. Because if he catches her, a fate worse than death awaits.

Jesse always dreamed of leaving the farm to explore the ruins of the big cities he’d heard about his whole life. He just never imagined he’d be forced to flee after strange men burned down his rural mountain town and murdered everyone he loved. Responsible for his kid brother and searching for an uncle he’s never met before, he isn’t sure he can navigate the perils of life among con artists and thieves long enough to find him.

Their two paths collide as they find themselves thrown together on the adventure of a lifetime.

Together, they may just discover that life is about more than just surviving.

Excerpt

One small change in position and now each of my soft curves was pressed intimately against the tall, hard length of his unyielding body. His blue eyes blazed in the dim light of the alley, reading something on my face that urged him on. This was supposed to be my trap.

His hands were buried in my hair now, a thumb tracing over my cheek to land on my bottom lip. I knew what he wanted. Parting my mouth, I wrapped my lips around the pad of his thumb, my tongue flicking against it before sucking softly. A deep thunderous sound rumbled through his chest to shake me down to my bones. His hand in my hair slid to the back of my head, pulling my mouth closer to his. He wanted me to kiss him. He wanted this to be more than a transaction. He wanted me to want him back.

I brushed my nose against his, and he stilled. All other motion and sensation forgotten as his eyes landed on my mouth, inching closer to his. I drank in the taste of his breath, a faint echo of the taste of his lips from before. My head tilted to the side, and he brushed the hair away from my face to see me more clearly as I angled toward him. He swallowed down whatever desperate words were on the tip of his tongue, and I took his chin in my hand, mouths open and millimeters apart.

About the Authors:

Lauren Sevier and A. Smith are longtime friends and co-authors from southern Louisiana. Guns and Smoke, their first joint publication, began as a “short” story after having too much wine on girl’s night.

Nine years later it is now the first novel in a Dystopian/Western Romance series.

The duo has plans to publish several series together in the future. A. Smith spends her time with her two rescue dogs and rescue cat surrounding herself with books and Labyrinth paraphernalia.

Lauren Sevier collects antique tea cups and tries to stay sane, though as the mother of a toddler she fails brilliantly most days. She also has a growing collection of crowns and tiaras and likes to act silly on TikTok. Look for more thrilling novels from The Fools Adventure series in the future!

Leather clings to his large, muscular frame. He turns my way. A hood covers a majority of his face with only a frown peeking from the bottom.

I stare wide eyed at him.

The man from the bar pulls his hands from his ears and looks at his blood coated fingers. A trickle of blood dribbles from his ear to his chin.

The man in black faces my assailant. His right hand reaches over his shoulder, and metal rings through the air as he unsheathes a sword.

Who the hell casually carries a sword on their back? Is there a convention in town? I pale at the high pitched wail in my head.

With sudden awareness, my attacker lifts his face to check his surroundings. Upon seeing the new addition to the alley, he jumps, fumbling onto his back before scuttling backwards like a crab.

Frozen in place, my fingers dig into my thighs as the man with the sword takes a swing towards him. I cover my mouth in horror as blood spills from the man’s neck. His body goes limp and there’s a small thud as his back hits the tarmac.

Characters and their worlds have inundated Kristen’s mind since she was a kid. Traveling to far off places and having words on a piece of paper transform into entire scenes pulling at her emotions is an obsession.

Her goal as a fantasy author isn’t solely to relish in her imagination, but to bring representation to this genre. She wants stories with characters who are diverse inside and out. Their differences are not the focal point of the story, but rather a natural part of their being. Due to this, you will often not only find characters of varying ethnicities, but of the LGBTQ+ community, who battle diseases, are neuroatypical, and plenty of other areas that make us all so different from each other. These are not their defining qualities. It’s simply a part of who they are. To further support these communities, Kristen donates 10% of her profits to various organizations.

When Kristen isn’t cooped up on her computer or curled up with a book, she is often outdoors– hiking, snorkeling, diving, camping, etc.

Currently, she resides in California with her husband and fur babies (two dogs and a cat).
