He held his thumb up to the light and she could see the sparkle from the tiny spec. “Glitter? I’m surprised you’re allowed to wear glitter in the ER,” he murmured.

Normally, she was never short of a word or snappy comeback, but somehow, right this second, her mind was blank like a white board at the end of the school year. All she could concentrate on was the tender touch and how strong and handsome he looked.

In the confines of the smashed vehicle, she hadn’t been able to see that he was quite tall. His shoulders were broad and she could easily imagine him decked out in tight jeans, a nice button-down shirt, wearing boots and a cowboy hat.

She took a deep breath and a step back, which was enough to jolt her mind into action. “It’s only a sliver of glitter. I’ve yet to leave any on a patient.”

“Good to know. I like it,” he said, with a smile that crinkled his eyes and showcased a dimple hiding in his cheek.

God, she was a sucker for a dimple. “Thanks. Glitter is life. You can never have too much of it.”

Crap on a cracker. Did I really say that out loud?

Brodie laughed at the same time as the radio clipped to his belt crackled to life. “I’ll take your word for it. See you around, Sparkles.”

The screams continued to play out on the phone. Jamie was not holding it during the attack, but it laid on the floor next to him with the video running.

“He wanted us to see it,” said Bolder.

“Who, what do you mean?”

“The demon…he purposely put the phone on an angle so it could capture his possession of Jamie.”

“He wanted us to watch the whole dastardly act?”

“More than that…he wanted to make us sick. Frighten us into submission—give up and walk away.”

Fixated on the five-minute video; images of Jamie handled by the demon played out in the act of evil. The devil tied his feet and hands, and they slowly lifted him from the ceiling upside down—hanging like a bat. Jamie screamed in pain as the demon ripped off the skin from his torso to prepare the marking of the pentagram. Blood oozed from the deep red exposed flesh as agonizing cries of help went unanswered.

It was an evil creature with huffs and a tail…hairy lower body in the shape of a dog. The upper torso of the demon was human, and it still managed to stand on two feet. A face with an elongated nose, pointed ears and sabre like teeth that slithered with an extended tongue. Pale, and it looked like death with bloodshot eyes and deep crease lines along the cheeks. It had no hair on its head other than pultruding blue veins that looked ready to burst.

He kissed her with a tenderness that made her knees weak. The way he smoothed his hands across her hair and cheek made her feel cherished. The reverence in his touch made her feel feminine and precious in a way she never had before. This gruff, hard man had so much gentleness and caring hidden inside him. He was terribly wrong about himself. Someday, somehow she’d find a way to prove it to him.

She nestled closer, relishing the warmth of his body. The way he was holding her now, not too tightly, was just right. She breathed in the sweet scent of hay mingled with horse and a musky male odor that was all Nathaniel’s own.

Of her own volition, she opened her mouth and invited him to kiss her the way he had kissed her once before. He made a sound of male satisfaction deep in his throat and promptly made the most of her invitation. They nipped, sampled, and explored, learning the texture and taste of each other. Her heart beat faster, and that delicious pang of longing was starting again somewhere deep in her belly.

About the Author:Anna DeForest wrote her first book-length piece of fiction in fifth grade. She taught history at the Colorado Heritage Center and a Denver private school. She was thrilled when Leisure Books bought her first historical romance, Golden Dreams. She was actually watching Sesame Street with her four-year-old when she received the good news call from her agent, but she managed to tear herself away from Big Bird long enough to listen to the terms of her new contract.

Growing up in Colorado gave Anna a lifelong taste for outdoor activities such as hiking, riding and skiing. She also enjoys gardening, which is currently quite a challenge because armadillos keep rooting around in her garden in Dallas.

Anna has always tried to write the kind of romances she likes to read—stories about warm, caring people who pursue their lives and loves with passion. These days, Anna is excited about offering four of her previously published romances to her new readers, along with three romances that have never been published before.
