(Ezra):
She perched herself up on her forearms and glared at me. “That was until you bolted from the office,” she blurted, and a sudden chill gave me goosebumps. Was I feeling her anger? I wasn’t sure, and now wasn’t the time to ask either.
“I was scared, love. Doesn’t it scare you?”
She laid back down and folded her arms over her stomach. “You scare me, Ezra.” Her voice was low and soft to my ears.
She had changed out of the linen gown and into cotton shorts and a loose t-shirt. I prefer women in lingerie, but when the side of her shirt lifted, exposing the side of her stomach, I couldn’t have been more turned on. I pushed myself from the door and sauntered over to her. Unable to stop, I ran my thumb over her bare skin just above her hip, where it dips at the waist. Her eyes settled on mine, and she didn’t move away from my touch.
“I haven’t felt this way about anyone in a very long time, Maeve, and that scares the hell out of me.”
She swallowed a few times, and I was delighted observing her edginess, knowing I was the cause. “No one can live numb forever—life’s too short.”
I pulled my hand away. Her words delivered a hard punch. If only she knew I didn’t have that sort of luxury. Men like me live numb forever.
“I don’t know how to feel,” I said. “I was robbed of my feelings long ago.”
She sat up and crisscrossed her legs. “What’s her name?”
