The clear blue skies created an inspiring view for the fifteen-minute drive to the park from her house. Fifty-nine degrees out and glowing sunshine bounced off the brightly colored canopy of trees. Unfortunately, the radiance of the day did nothing to lighten her distracted frame of mind. She looked around the entrance and stretched in preparation for a jog. She didn’t know which path Jason chose that Saturday, so she walked past the stone benches and started down the first trail she saw.
Her steady pace soon became a jog and then a run. There was so much to consider. Where can he be? If he’s not hurt, where did he go? Maybe he decided to take some fantastic adventure and didn’t tell anyone. It would be just like him to go on safari in Africa, but not to tell me or to miss work and worry his family.
She had so many unanswered questions. Far down the path her breath didn’t keep up with her fast pace. Her nerves somewhat soothed by the physical exertion, she eased into a slow, steady jog.
She didn’t know how much time had passed, but the sky darkened as some clouds moved in. State officials had meticulously painted color-coded shapes on the trunks of the trees to help visitors stay on the path, but Vanessa did not know where each trail ended or how much further she had to walk to return to the entrance. Alone in an unfamiliar place, she shuddered as a cold shiver swept up her spine. The denseness of the forest allowed her to see only a couple of yards in any direction. Her heart pounding, she found the next trail marker. Even with no idea where it led, she had to keep moving. The branches on the trees swayed with the wind, causing the leaves to rustle. She walked swiftly, desperately searching for any familiar sight, hoping it would lead her back to where she entered.
