Lilianna and Thom never thought they would meet a Sepherii, the mythical creature from stories of the Dark Days when Morauth spread evil like a contagious disease across the land. But why has Torr, the Sepherii, been summoned again?Decades have gone by since the hero Rendar overwhelmed Morauth high on the Ledges, cutting her deeply with the black obsidian blade given to him by Torr. This time, Lilianna and Thom will be called on to help. Only the Dagger of Rendar has the power to banish her again, but in the hands of a child will the weapon be enough? The young descendants of Rendar must be strong enough to strike the blow. Nothing less than the future of Faltofar and all its inhabitants is at stake. It just gets a little muddled when the family tree also includes the sorceress Morauth.

No more than ten paces separated the two. As Olitus moved forward, so did the Sepherii, until they were both within feet of each other. To Thom’s amazement, Torr extended one long leg and bent the other in what could only be defined as his equivalent of a bow. Olitus acknowledged the Sepherii’s formal greeting with a nod of his head.

“These are strange times in Faltofar. No human would deny the blessings of your kind at his or her side,” Olitus said, with the beginning of a smile. “I speak for my family in saying we are honored.”

Torr stood to his full height, his head tilted proudly back. His eyes spiraled and a low hum emanated from him. The previously unconcerned grouse hens, disturbed by the activity in the yard, flapped and squawked in their pen. Olitus, displaying the sense of humor he was renowned for, began to laugh at the clamor of anxious bird noise that filled the air, and the formality of the moment dissipated in the fresh night air. His father’s laughter was infectious, and Thom joined in, the tension he’d felt all day disappearing in the dusty yard. Olitus gathered his son to his side in a bear hug.

“The Sepherii is well taken care of, Thom?” he asked, waving a weary hand at the bandaged foreleg.

“Good!” he exclaimed at Thom’s nod.

Olitus swiped his hand across eyes bleary with dust and travel, scratching at the growth of a beard. “Then let us leave him to the night for now.” Before turning away, Olitus stepped even closer to the Sepherii and spoke softly.

“Well met, Torr. I am glad for your company.” He nodded a goodnight and moved toward the porch.

Thom hastily stepped closer to the Sepherii, awkwardly raising his hand, indecisive as to whether he should extend it in a handclasp or just wave. He opted for the wave.

“Good night Torr,” he said, then hurriedly followed Olitus, almost bumping into him when his father stopped abruptly.  Olitus had pivoted to address Thom when his eyes alighted on the dwarf’s club tucked into his son’s belt. All humor was gone. The moment stretched out.

“I would gather you have a story to tell me, son, but I am in need of the comfort of our hearth and your mother’s kindness, and words are better woven in the light.”

Morri considers herself a bit of a renaissance woman, diversifying her life experience through her work as a river guide, personal trainer, bartender and freelance writer. She and her husband currently share their home with two extraordinary teenagers, a persnickety old cat, and a lifetime collection of books. EXCERPT:

“Oh, right, I bet you have a lot of exes that would try to destroy me or something.”

Damn.

“You do!” She pointed at me, grinning like she’d won the lottery.

“They would not try to destroy you. They would be jealous, of course, but still.” My past was a little more recent, but it was still the past. “I bet you have men that would want to kill me, too.”

She shook her head and shrugged. “All my exes are married now.”

“Just because they are married does not mean they do not still want you.” Some of mine were married when I met them. But I was not going to admit that, or she really would just get up and walk away.

She snickered. “You have no idea how good I am at burning bridges.”

“Then tell me.”

“Oh, also”—she was very good at changing the subject—“we don’t even know if we will like each other. What if we can’t stand each other?”

“We don’t even know if we will like each other. What if we can’t stand each other?”

“We are doing fine, now, aren’t we?”

“Today doesn’t count.”

“Why?”

“Because…just because,” she grumbled with her eyes closed.

“That’s very clear.”

“Shut up.”

I snickered.

“You’re laughing at me, but I’m serious. You came all the way here, but what if you hate me? More importantly, what if I hate you?”

More importantly. “How about you and I get to know each other more while I’m here.” That was originally my goal, but something had shifted in the last twenty-four hours.

“Get to know each other?” She grimaced against the pillow. “That sounds like dating.”

“Yes, I believe that is what the commoners call it.”

“Dating sucks. It’s too stressful. You’re always trying so hard to make the best first impression or say the right thing.”

“You are very difficult. You know that, right? You will not agree just to get married, but you also dislike dating.”

She smiled, partially asleep. “I know. My mom is always annoyed with me about it. Are you giving up on me already, Your Highness?”

“For the sake of my country and pride, I refuse.”

“Don’t say you weren’t warned,”

EXCERPT:

A sudden guitar riff from one of the roadies has the crowd rushing to the stage, almost knocking me off my feet. When I look up, Dawson is gone. I jump up and down as Denzel strums a few chords, trying to see over the heads of the group of girls that have moved in front of me. We can’t lose this footage.

A hand on my shoulder stops me. It’s one of the roadies we’ve gotten friendly with, the one I nicknamed The Rock.

“Need a hand?” He towers over me like some tree hidden in an old-time forest. My face must show my confusion because he touches his shoulder. “C’mon, get up here so you can see.”

He kneels and I clamour onto his linebacker shoulders, which gives me an excellent view of the stage. This is more like it because I can see Dawson right up at the front.

“You okay up there, Shae?” Neely calls up to me with a concerned smile.

I grin widely in response. “Perfect.” Then I turn my attention to Denzel, who starts to sing.

Pink hair, dark eyes

I watch you watching me

Big smile, wide eyes

I love you loving me

Is he…? Is this…? My jaw drops as excitement turns into a tingling feeling of wonderment.

Pink hair, dark eyes

I like you following me

Big smile, wide eyes

I want you in my life

Neely turns with an expression of disbelief. “Is this song about you?” she shouts over the noise.

Denzel Duke wrote a song about me? About me?

“He wrote a song about you!” Neely cries, for once excitement breaking past her usual cool composure. A few feet away, Dawson comes to the same conclusion and turns the phone to me sitting on the guy’s shoulders and being serenaded by one of pop music’s fastest rising stars.

If there was any doubt in anyone’s mind who Denzel is singing to, the fact that he catches my eyes with a big smile, and actually stops playing to hold out his hand confirms it.

“Oh my God!” Neely is now jumping up and down.

Still with me perched on his shoulders, the security guard pushes his way through the crowd to the edge of the stage. The crowd parts with a collective mutinous expression when the females realize I am Pink Hair of the song. I can’t stop my grin even if I wanted to, my heart bouncing faster than the music.

Denzel Duke puts down his guitar as I awkwardly transfer from shoulders to stage.

I’m onstage with Denzel Duke!

He meets me in the middle of the stage and takes my hand, giving me a twirl before leading me into a slow dance in front of a thousand screaming fans, all singing to me.

Sometimes I really love my life.

Author Bio:

Holly Kerr is the author of fifteen chick-lit, romantic comedy, and women’s fiction novels, but don’t ask her to explain the differences in the genres. She grew up a farm girl but now calls Toronto home, where she lives with her three very tall children, following their sports exploits like any dutiful mother.

She’s a lover of Marvel movies, Star Wars movies…really, any movies, and has a surprising amount of worthless pop culture info stored in her head. She likes oceans over mountains, tea over coffee, and can mix a darn fine dirty martini, with extra olives, of course.
